The S.B.R Govt. (Auto & Junior) Women’s College, Berhampur is one of the distinguished educational institutions of Odisha. It had a humble origin on July 7, 1958 and functioned under the affiliation of Utkal University. It started functioning with only the Intermediate Arts classes in the building of the Government Secondary Training School, Berhampur. At the outset, there were only six Associatative Professors who sincerely devoted their time and intellect for the growth of the institution into its present form.
This college was affiliated to Berhampur University on January 1, 1967. The Degree classes for Arts were introduced in 1960, Science in 1981 & Commerce in 2013 . Imparting higher education in this college in a specialized manner, gained momentum by the introduction of Honours classes in various subjects. The Honours classes in Economics were introduced in 1974-75, English in 1975-76, History in 1978-79, Political Science and Psychology in 1980, Home Science in 1981-82, Botany and Zoology in 1989-90, Physics, Chemistry, Sanskrit and Odia in 1992-93, Philosophy in the year 2010-11. Commerce was introduced in 2014.
The college provides residential facilities to the students. The hostel was set-up in 1964. In addition to learning and attending their course work, the students are also encouraged towards creative activities, social service and cherishing patriotism through their college magazine (first published in 1963), N.S.S, N.C.C and Red Cross wings. The volunteers of the N.S.S & N.C.C have earned name and fame both inside and outside the state. The college is a nodal center for self defense training program for the entire District and runs smoothly . The college runs very smoothly with a student strength of 2560 & faculty members of different disciplines. This college of course aspires to be one of the glorious and dignified institutions of the state and expects to receive genuine cooperation of all.
The name of the college is changed to “Sasibhushan Rath Govt. Womens’s College, Berhampur from 21.10.1998 as per the government of Odisha, Department of Higher Education Notification N0.III E/M.11/98/60968/HE. Since then the College is known by its new name. The college attained Autonomous status in the year 2007. The college is accredited at the ‘B++’ level by NAAC on 14.12.2016 in its second cycle.
