About NSS (National Service Scheme)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Government of India public service program under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. Established in 1969 during the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, NSS aims to develop the personality, character, and social responsibility of students through community service.

NSS encourages young volunteers from Colleges, Universities, and Higher Secondary (+2) institutions to participate actively in social work, enabling them to develop empathy, discipline, leadership, and a commitment to nation-building.

The programme instills the idea of social welfare and aims to help the underprivileged lead a life of dignity. NSS volunteers provide essential support during natural or man-made disasters by offering food, clothing, first aid, and humanitarian assistance.

Types of Activities

NSS activities are broadly divided into:
• Regular Activities – 120 hours
• Annual Special Camps – 120 hours

Students who complete 240 hours of NSS work over 2 years are awarded a certificate by the University, signed by the Vice-Chancellor and NSS Programme Coordinator.

Activities Conducted by NSS Volunteers

• Cleaning drives
• Afforestation initiatives
• Stage shows and awareness rallies
• Campaigns on social issues, education, and hygiene
• Health camps with invited medical professionals
• Community support and relief activities

NSS Special Camps generally last 7–10 days and are usually conducted in rural or suburban areas. Volunteers work freely based on the needs of the community, with no preassigned tasks, allowing maximum flexibility and impact.
